Center Affiliation and Expertise: Integrative Health Sciences Facility
Dr. Beichel has more than sixteen years of experience in the field of medical computer vision and graphics. He was the project leader on several medical image analysis research projects. His research is focused on developing novel robust medical image analysis and segmentation methods. In relation to this application, Dr. Beichel’s expertise and innovation is in computer-aided analysis of airway trees in 3D/4D X-ray computed tomography scans of humans and cryomicrotome images of laboratory animals (including rats, mice, and the CF pig model). Robust image segmentation and analysis methods are key to EHSRC research on environmental lung diseases. These techniques enhance modeling and monitoring of lung deposition and clearance and allow more precise assessment of responses to the treatment of these diseases. Dr. Beichel’s research facilitates more accurate dosimetry extrapolations from laboratory animals to humans.
