Center Affiliation and Expertise: Pilot Grant Program (PGP) Director; Pulmonary Toxicology Thematic Area
Jong Sung Kim is an Associate Professor of Occupational & Environmental Health in the College of Public Health. He directs the EHSRC’s Pilot Grant Program and serves as Director of Graduate Studies in the Human Toxicology Program at the University of Iowa (U.I.). Kim brings extensive expertise in environmental chemistry, toxicology, metallomics, and human biomonitoring, with emphasis on metals, persistent organic pollutants, and emerging contaminants such as nanoparticles and micro- and nanoplastics. His interdisciplinary collaborations span epidemiology, chemistry, engineering, and clinical sciences, positioning him well to facilitate innovative research directions in environmental health sciences (EHS). Through externally funded projects, he integrates advanced analytical approaches (e.g., metallomics, mass spectrometry, chemical exposome profiling) with experimental toxicology to elucidate the health impacts of environmental exposures. His work has advanced in vitro air-liquid interface (ALI) models for studying airborne particulates and their interactions with metals and persistent organic pollutants, and he has established toenail biomarkers for cumulative exposure assessment used in large-scale North American cohorts. More recently, he combines metallomics and untargeted exposome profiling using high-resolution mass spectrometry to identify novel biomarkers of exposure and disease risk. Kim is deeply committed to mentoring trainees and early-stage investigators (ESIs), supporting their success in pilot projects and independent research careers.
